A rich seam of hard drive detritus uncovered recently: a whole folder full of insect, spider and butterfly images scanned in the mid 1990s (somewhat haphazardly in a few cases, although not by me) from vintage magazines.

More horrible stuff from China… I promise I don’t hate China as much as my collection of hard drive detritus might seem to suggest. I have a scan of the frontispiece, so I know the book they’re from is The Punishments of China– it also says “Illustrated with twenty-two engravings and explanations in English and French.” Unfortunately I don’t have those explanations in English and French, so let’s all guess what the punishments are.

A selection from a folder on my hard drive that I’ve not touched for ten years, containing numerous pictures of archaic costume from around the world. What a shame it is that these ARE archaic; what a shame that the most boring and generic items of Western apparel have almost entirely become the whole world’s de facto uniform.
Losing one’s moustache appears to be worth an impressive (for a century ago) £10, while losing an ear is only worth three times as much at £30.
Let’s start the recycling with this interesting/inexplicable collection of Chinese Communist LP covers, because I think we all need more of those in 2013. I last interacted with these in December of 2007 and I lived in China at that time, but I definitely didn’t do these scans. Some of this stuff– and its modern equivalent– is still available in on CD Chinese shops and let me assure you there’s nothing good about any of it, not even kitsch value. If anybody owns up to having these LPs then we’ll all know what to say when she or he asks us if we’d like to hear a few records.
